Social Bookmarking, free advertising for your business.

Social bookmarking has become one of the most popular methods of driving traffic to websites over the last couple of years.  Social bookmarking is sort of like “word of mouth” over the internet, and is also referred to as networking.  If you’ve ever shared a website with a friend or relative, you have essentially taken part of a social bookmarking strategy.  Some websites receive a huge amount of traffic every single day because of people, like you, choosing to share the links with friends.

Likewise, if you have your own website, you can use social bookmarking tactics as well.  You can sign up for websites such as Digg, Twitter, Stumbled Upon, Myspace, Facebook, Squidoo Lens, etc., and promote yourself and your website through them.  You can add friends (or Twitter followers) with similar interests, so that your traffic will be targeted.  Targeted traffic is very important to have considering the visitors will be interested about the subject your site is about.

Millions of people all around the world create profiles at these sites and, odds are, many of them would be interested in your website.  Keep in mind that you shouldn’t outright spam your website, though.  Add friends with people who think may be interested in your site, and then establish yourself as an expert on the subject matter.  Give advice, answer questions, keep your friends and followers informed.  Many of these sites also have message forums and blogs, so you need to take advantage of these features as well.

Keep in mind that in order for social bookmarking to work, you need to put some time and effort in it.  You can’t just simply sign up for these sites and then expect some traffic to come in.  You need to put some care into making your profiles.  You need to participate in bulletin posting, commenting, messaging, etc.  Let everyone know why you’re an expert on a particular subject.  Put some thought into everything that you add to your profile.  Leave friendly, yet informative comments.

Social bookmarking sites typically display the latest, most popular news, links, and articles on their front page.  Obviously, the websites that make the front page will receive most of the traffic.  It should be your goal to get your site to the front page, if you can.  You can still get a lot of traffic without making the front page, but your social bookmarking strategy will become a whole lot easier if you do.

Another feature that some social bookmarking sites have, such as Yahoo Answers, is a question and answer section, where people can ask questions about a particular subject and experts can answer.  You should take advantage of this feature wherever you can find it.  If anyone asks any questions about your niche, give them an interesting answer and provide your website as reference for them to visit.  Don’t just spam your link though; make sure that you really give them an informative answer along with it.

And now you know about social bookmarking, and how it can help you become an internet entrepreneur.  You can network, make friends, and rack up some visitors to your site---all at once!
