What I learned From My Uncle: How to Become Present

As many of my readers know, I am all about being in the present. The present creates our yesterdays and as well as our tomorrows. I am a big believer that we should appreciate what we have now, instead of focusing on what we wished we had or are currently lacking. By being appreciative of what we have in the present we can create long lasting happiness and fulfillment.

Chances are you have experienced a loss of someone you love. When I was young my Uncle passed away in his early forty's. He had a heart attack in his sleep, no one saw it coming. He was a great man who worked hard, supported his family, cherished the little things, and taught his curious nephew about sales and integrity.

My Aunt Alicia and my Uncle Steve would watch me and my younger brother during the week while my parents worked, in result they practically helped raise us. The one thing that amazed me about him, was that he always seemed happy, and I never heard him raise his voice or get upset. This was weird to me because I had come from a household where there was constant fighting and yelling. I looked up to him, and wanted to be just like him, always happy, hardworking, and showing love to everyone.

I was fourteen and at work when I had gotten the news. My dad came to the mall at the kiosk I was working at and told me what had happened. I couldn't believe it, and I couldn't understand why God would take someone like my Uncle. His passing has forever changed me, but I still dream to be like him, so I stay happy.

From that point on, I decided that I would never take life for granted, because no matter who you are, whether you are rich or poor, life can be taken from you at any moment. Life is something to be cherished and appreciated, because all that we know for sure is that its the only life we currently have. My Uncle Steve changed my life forever, and I owe a lot of credit to him for the man I've become today.

How to be Present, Lessons from my Uncle:
  • His passing has taught me to be reflective and not let the small things bother me.
  • His passing has taught me to be passionate about whatever it is I'm doing because life is to short not too.
  • His passing has taught me to love everyone and forgive easily, because you never know when they might be gone.
  • He taught me that it doesn't matter what your selling, it matters why your selling it.
  • He taught me that there is such a thing as a happy family.
  • He showed me the type of person I wished to become.
  • He showed me how to cherish life
  • He taught me how to go after my dreams
  • He showed me love

Rest in peace Uncle Steve. This article is dedicated too you, and although my readers did not know you, they now know some of your story. May your legacy continue, and through my words I hope I can teach others the lessons I learned from you. Until I see you again.
-Love Allen
