"You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself."
Jim Rohn
Keeping track of the tasks in which you use in order to achieve your goals will direct your energy towards success. Use this as a constant reminder so you can stay focused and not waste your time on irrelevant activities.
When your motivation begins to break, take the time to make a action plan. Create this plan with two goals, one short term and one long term. Being able to accomplish the short term goal will help build your motivation for getting out of a slump and accomplish the long term goal. I would recommend that for any long term goals you have, create a short term goal timeline that leads up to the accomplishment of that long term goal.
No matter what you will hit times of low energy, bad luck, or lack of motivation, but the key is developing direction. Direction will aid in you to staying determined. You must discipline your mind, in order to achieve any type of long term goal. When you use the power of direction you stay focused, any goal becomes just a matter of time.

I like your advice of making two goals - one short and one long term. This forces you to make one goal that you can accomplish in the near future while also having the bigger picture in mind.
That is one of the essential things to do. To change yourself!
