"Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you."
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Once you learn that there really is no such thing as defeat, only learning experiences you can truly begin to succeed. Although this might be tough for some people to swallow, I believe in this one hundred percent. When you begin to look at life from an angle in which everything that happens to you is a chance for personal growth, the only result is success.
Tips for handling defeat
1. Promise yourself to always look forward. No matter what the circumstance is, always continue to strive for improvement. Commit to yourself that you will be everything that you can be, why be less?
2. Successful people leave clues. Look up to people that are where you want to be. What makes them different, how do they continue to succeed? Model yourself after them, and you will also continue to succeed.
3. When the Whys get strong, the How's get easier. Why do you wish to accomplish your goals? The more you are passionate and definite towards your goals, the easier they will be to achieve them. Opportunities will begin to present themselves to you, if you are passionate about why you wish to achieve your goals.
4. Be grateful for the things you have already accomplished, and that you have the chance and ability to accomplish more. Think about all the things you are grateful for. Life could always be worse, so be glad for what you already have.

Agree. You can take anything that doesn't work as a stepping stone for success. There is no defeat.
